Location:
Aleppo City – The crossing point connecting the eastern and western parts of the city.
Nature of Work:
Data collection and analysis, developing a comprehensive design vision, engaging the local community in formulating proposals, and improving infrastructure while considering the management of negative heritage in the area.
Significance:
The project aims to transform the crossing point from a symbol of division into a symbol of unity and recovery, serving as a model that can be replicated in other Syrian cities.
Activities Completed to Date:
- Launch of a community survey (May 20, 2025): A field and digital survey was prepared and distributed to collect the voices and memories of residents and passersby who previously used the crossing, and to gather their opinions on its future design and symbolic role.
- Analysis of survey results: The data was processed to extract indicators regarding the aspirations of the local community and to identify priorities for design and social intervention.
- Current situation analysis: A comprehensive field study to assess the condition of the infrastructure, land use, traffic and pedestrian movement, and environmental and social factors affecting the area.
- Urban analysis: A detailed analysis of the urban fabric on both the eastern and western sides, studying the visual, movement, and functional connections between them.
- Preparation of preliminary design concepts: Development of a set of sketches and initial visions for redesigning the street, reflecting the approach towards creating a unifying urban space that integrates the heritage and social dimensions within an integrated vision for recovery.
